Downtown Revitalization
North
Little Rock is expending considerable effort to revitalize its historic
downtown. Main Street Argenta, working under the umbrella of the
national Main Street programs, numerous Community Development Corporations
and a number of volunteers are providing manpower and financial
backing to restore this area of the city. Downtown houses are purchased,
rehabilitated and resold to families interested in this area.
Economic restructuring also is underway. Seven financial institutions
have formed a low-interest loan pool of $3 million for the purchase
of business real estate within the designated district.
Military Facilities
Camp Robinson, the 32,000-acre headquarters of the Arkansas National
Guard, is located on the city's north edge. Used as a training camp
for recruits during both world wars, Camp Robinson now serves as
a drill site for guard troops in addition to housing their administrative
office. The camp is also the training for all United States Guard
Officers. A majority of the camp area is heavily wooded, with several
creeks and streams. This creates a popular area for hiking, fishing,
and hunting and most of the camp is open to visitors, although persons
wishing to hunt or fish on the grounds must register as they enter
and exit the facility.
The 6,000 acres
Little Rock Air Force Base, the largest training facility for
the C-130 airplanes, is located 14 miles north in the city of Jacksonville.
The base houses the air combat wing and employs 11,400 military
personnel in addition to over a thousand civilians. Ten thousand
military retirees make the area their home. Many base personnel
make their home in North Little Rock. See the population section
for more details.
