Federal Empowerment Zone
Parts of the cities of North Little Rock and Little Rock received
a Federal Empowerment Zone designation. A project team composed
of representatives from both cities, Pulaski County and the University
of Arkansas at Little Rock prepared the winning grant application.
Only seven communities across the nation were selected from the
thirty-five applicants. Since the Empowerment Zone program began
in 1994, only 30 communities have been selected prior to this third
round of competition.
The new Empowerment Zones will provide federal tax incentives and
regulatory relief to stimulate business investment in the distressed
target areas. The Zones will be used to encourage public-private
collaborations that will generate economic development for areas
that have been experiencing disinvestments and need revitalization.
The North Little Rock Economic Development Corporation represented
the city during the application process and will facilitate Empowerment
Zone activities.
